1 Pick up your science journal.
The nuclear atom Pick up your science journal.

2 Essential questions What is the basic unit of matter?
How do we know the structure of the atom? How are elements used in our daily lives?

3 Is there something which is indivisible and indestructible?
The Greek Philosophers (approx 2500 years ago) thought that air, earth, fire and water were the elements that formed all matter

4 Inside an atom Proton = positively charged subatomic particle
Neutron = subatomic particle with mass equal to proton but no electric charge Nucleus = center of an atom, composed of protons and neutrons

5 Inside an atom Electron = negatively charged particle
Electron cloud = space around the nucleus of an atom where atom’s electrons are found

6 How much does an atom weigh?
Particle Charge Mass in grams Atomic mass unit (u) Proton +1 1.67 x 10-24 1.01 Neutron Electron -1 9.11 x 10-28 (1/1840) Atomic mass unit allows us to easily compare mass of individual atoms 1 u = 1/12 mass of carbon

7 The rule for finding out the number of protons, neutrons, electrons
Atomic number = number of protons Mass number = number of protons and neutrons

8 EQ: What is the fundamental basis of life?
Atomic structure EQ: What is the fundamental basis of life? TODAY: In your blog: what are the parts of ‘build an atom’ activity that you were confused about, if any? Have your rough draft out. I will check that you have completed this. ANNOUCEMENTS: This week’s feedback distributer: Mariana S and Michael Quiz on Friday

9 To take away from ‘Build an atom’
Stability of an atom depends on the balance of protons and neutrons The element name is determined by the atomic number The charge of an atom is determined by the balance of protons and electrons The atomic mass is made up of protons and neutrons

10 To do for today Atomic mass: Work through the atomic mass worksheet. When you are finished, show me and we can check it together. Peer edit lab report draft: Find a partner and write your partner’s name on the board. Once it is approved by me, use the lab report rubric to carefully edit your partner’s draft. If you further wish me to edit your lab, put it in the submit box. Study for the quiz next class. Eggspert?

11 EQ: What is the fundamental basis of life?
Atomic structure EQ: What is the fundamental basis of life? TODAY: Get a half sheet of paper and cut in half. Write down two questions and answers related to the topic of the quiz today. We will use these questions for the eggspert game. Submit in the basket at the front. ANNOUCEMENTS: This week’s feedback distributer: Mariana S and Michael

12 To do for today Peer edit lab report draft: Find a partner and write your partner’s name on the board. Once it is approved by me, use the lab report rubric to carefully edit your partner’s draft. If you further wish me to edit your lab, put it in the submit box.
