1 Today is Wednesday, February 20, 2013
Homework: - START YOUR EXPERIMENTS…RECORD EVERYTHING YOU DO AND ALL RESULTS!!!!!!!! - Read Chapter 11, Lesson 2 (for tomorrow) - Ch. 11 H.W. Packet (due Monday) Science Fair Materials So Far compilation project (DUE THIS FRIDAY) Warm Up: In table groups, discuss the following: - What does the word matter mean? - What are some properties of your favorite food or one of your favorite foods?

2 Goal for Today SWBAT Recognize the following key vocabulary terms: weight, mass, and volume. SWBAT Understand where to find good scientific sources for background science fair research and the importance of repeated trials in experimentation. SWBAT Know living organisms and most materials are composed of just a few elements.

3 More than 100 basic kinds of matter and these are called elements
Elements are basic building blocks of matter. Can’t be broken in smaller pieces with ordinary physical or chemical processes Few found in nature in pure form (i.e. gold) Elements combine to form things around us Rust = iron and oxygen Living and non-living things made up of a few elements combined in many ways

4 Volume – the amount of space an object takes up (mL, cc).
Elements have chemical and physical properties. We use properties to identify them. Weight and Mass Weight – a measure of the pull of gravity on an object (N). Mass – the amount of matter in an object (Kg). Volume – the amount of space an object takes up (mL, cc).

5 Don’t write this down…. But listen….
Where are some good places to find good background research? Tell me some places you have looked. Why is it ALWAYS a good idea to do any kind of scientific experiment more than one time?

6 Practice Hypothesis: If we feed dogs with Brendan’s Xtra-Special Proprietary Blend SUPER-Growth Dog Food, then they will grow wings. Talk to your face partner and come up with a PREDICTION about this hypothesis (1 minute)

7 Practice Hypothesis: If we feed plants with Stephen’s Xtra-Special Proprietary Blend SUPER-Growth Plant Fertilizer, then they will grow taller than plants exposed to only normal water and sunlight. Talk to your face partner and come up with a PREDICTION about this hypothesis (1 minute)

8 Take 2 minutes….. Talk face partner and come up with a hypothesis about your own science fair experiment….don’t get into groups, just talk to your face partner. You are just practicing now.

9 Predicting (Ch. 11 Skill, page 341)

10 Closing it up…. What does the word “Matter” mean in a scientific sense? Anything that has mass and takes up space Tell me a good place to look for scientifically accurate material for background research. Answers can vary, .org/.edu websites, science books, science magazines, etc. When we talk about an element’s properties, what are we talking about? The unique characteristics that define that element
