Tests of Significance Section 10.2
2
Test of Significance Used to assess the evidence provided by data about some claim concerning a population
3
Null Hypothesis H0 Says there is no effect or no change in the population
4
Alternative Hypothesis
Ha Describes the alternative to the null hypothesis Uses the wording of the problem
5
P-value The probability under the normal curve to the right of the observed x bar. Small P-values are evidence against H0 Large P-values fail to give evidence against H0
6
Significance Level Used to determine if results are statistically significant Rule of thumb – statistically significant if P-value is less than .05
7
Significance Test Identify population of interest and parameter to draw conclusions from. State null and alternative hypotheses (use words and symbols)
8
Choose inference procedure, verify conditions
If conditions are met, calculate test statistic and find P-value Interpret results in context of problem
