2 Ratify ( V )—to confirm or pass something, such as an amendment
The United States ratified the 18th Amendment on January 16, 1919 because many believed prohibiting the sale of alcohol would solve many of the problems in the country.

3 Abstinence ( N ) – the act of stopping yourself from doing something (e.g., drinking) Many religious groups such as Christians and Muslims practice the abstinence of drinking alcohol because they believe it is terrible for your health.

4 Temperance ( N ) - abstinence from drinking alcohol
Many religious groups in the early 20th century practiced temperance because many felt alcohol was destroying the family unit.

5 Consumption ( N ) – the act of eating or drinking
The consumption and production of alcohol did not decrease during Prohibition because many Americans saw it as an opportunity to make money.

6 Hooch ( N ) - slang term for alcohol, commonly used in the 1920s to refer to illegal whiskey Bootleggers called alcohol _____________________ to disguise the name to the authorities cracking down on illegal selling of liquor.

7 Alien ( N ) - a foreigner who is not a citizen
Americans called immigrants coming into the United States aliens since they are outsiders who are not yet citizens of the country.

8 Degeneracy ( N ) - being in decline; having qualities that are not normal or desirable Before Prohibition, doctors and scientists believed alcohol consumption caused degeneracy in children and in people due to the health effects they claimed they observed over time.
