2. Five Goals of US Foreign Policy
Goal #1: National Security—preserve the security of the US
protection of a nation’s borders and territories against invasion or control by foreign powers.
basic goal -we would not be able to do anything we need to do securely
helps us determine how we should deal with other nations.

3. Goal #2—Stop Terrorism stop them in order to keep the nation safe
safe guard for American interests overseas

4. Goal # 3 World Peace
If other nations are at peace there will be little chance that the US can be drawn into a conflict.
This was the main reason to organize the United Nations after WWII.

5. Goal # 4 Free and Open Trade
economic interests must also be protected
maintaining trade as well as preserving access to natural resources are goals of our foreign policy.
trade is a necessity for the US.

6. Goal # 5 Human Rights and Democracy
want to encourage all countries to respect the human rights of freedom, justice, and equality.
best way to do this is through democratic government.
victims of natural disasters or starvation have looked to the US for help.
in times of crisis the US has responded with medical aid, food, and technical assistance.
