Section 2 – Composition of Functions
Chapter 1 Section 2 – Composition of Functions
2
Combining of Functions
The Combination of functions is simply to take two or more functions and combine them using one of the four operations. EX 1: (f+g)(x) where f(x)= 3x2 – 4 and g(x)= 4x + 5 EX 2: (f∙g)(x) where f(x)= 2x – 6 and g(x)= 5x3 +2
3
A Few More Combinations
EX 3: (f/g)(x) where f(x)= 3x2 – 4 and g(x)= 4x + 5 EX 4: (f-g)(x) where f(x)= 2x – 6 and g(x)= 5x3 +2
4
Composition of Functions
The Composition of two functions is where we are going to place one function into the other. EX 5: f(g(x)) where f(x)= 2x – 6 and g(x)= 5x3 +2 EX 6: g(f(x)) where f(x)= 2x – 6 and g(x)= 5x3 +2
5
A Note About Notation in the Book
Sometimes the book uses the notation [fᵒg][x]. This is the exact same as f(g(x)).
