Turn to page 5R…. What is pH?
pH stands for “potential for hydrogen”. More of the element hydrogen in soil, the more “acidic” the soil. pH is a number typically between1 and 14 The LOWER the number the more acidic the item. For example battery acid has a very low pH value. Amount of acid in the soil help decide how well the soil can grow things.

Soil pH Lab reminders When it is time report to your assigned lab station Avoid touching the dirt…use only the spoon and stick. Avoid using too much water….you want to make a paste out of the soil and water. Do the 2 samples When the lab is finished… DUMP DIRT AND WATER IN THE CONTAINER THAT IS IN FRONT OF THE ROOM…. DO NOT POUR DOWN THE SINK….IT WILL PLUG UP THE DRAIN This lab is done early in the year prior to the matter unit. It serves to get the students to used the scientific method AND to learn to move about the room during lab days.
