Transition Element Ionic Compounds
2
Review Transition Elements Metals Groups 3-12
No exact number of valence electrons Therefore, can form multiple types of positive ions (cations)
3
Roman Numerals I II III IV V VI VII
4
Naming Transition Element Ionic Compounds
Write metal first Use roman numerals to indicate the oxidation number (charge) of the metal Write the roman numeral in parenthesis following the name of the metal unless the charge is 1 Then write nonmetal changing the ending to “ide”
5
Example: CuCl Copper Cu+1 since Cl is -1 and the charges must balance 1= I Copper (I) or Copper Copper Chloride
6
Practice Problem 1: Write the name of the following ionic compound CuCl2
7
Practice Problem 2: Write the name of the following ionic compound Cr2O3
8
Practice Problem 3: Write the name of the following ionic compound PbO3
9
Transition Metal Ionic Compound Chemical Formulas
Write symbols for each ion with metal written first Number in parenthesis is the oxidation number (charge) for the transition element ion Balance charges and write subscripts if extra atoms are needed to get a net charge of zero
10
Example: zinc (II) chloride
ZnCl Zn+2 Cl- ZnCl2
11
Practice Problem 4: Write the chemical formula for titanium (II) phosphide.
12
Practice Problem 5: Write the chemical formula for osmium (III) oxide.
13
Write the chemical formula for Manganese (II) oxide.
Practice Problem 6: Write the chemical formula for Manganese (II) oxide.
