1. Gain the attention of the audience Attention getter that will get them listening to you Video Clip 2. Clearly reveal your speech subject Make sure audience knows what the topic is 3. Inspire audience interest in your topic Get them motivated to listen

Prove that you knowledge of your topic 5. Give audience a road map Let the audience know what’s coming Redundancy Don’t let them wonder where your going with the speech

Hello, good morning, good evening, etc. Helps build rapport

Real/hypothetical Give direction when asking real question Don’t pause too long after rhetorical question Startling stats/statement Shocking or unexpected openings can arouse interest Reference a recent event Connect by talking about something everyone is aware of Any examples of recent events that were widely discussed

Tell a joke, humor is a good way to begin Be careful not to use jokes that could be offensive Reference to the occasion Mention the occasion in your opening line Grand opening, banquet, celebration etc. Begin with a quotation Use a powerful quotation Historical or literary

Helps audience visualize This puts your audience mentally where you want them to be Begin with a story A good storyteller can open with a brief but powerful story
