Write Linear Equations in Point-Slope Form
6.2 Write Linear Equations in Point-Slope Form LEARNING TARGETS: Students will be able to… Write an equation in point-slope form. Graph an equation in point-slope form. Use point slope to write an equation of a line given two points or a point and a slope.
2
Forms of linear equations we already know
Standard form: Ax + By = C A, B, C are integers Useful when graphing intercepts Slope-intercept form y = mx + b use when you know the slope and y-intercept
3
What if… What could we do to write the equation of a line if we are given two points and one of the points is not the y-intercept? Find the slope Use Point-Slope Form to find the equation of the line Change to Slope-Intercept Form
4
Today’s new form of a line
Point-Slope Form Useful when you know a point (not the y-intercept) and a slope and want to write an equation of a line.
5
Today’s new form of a line
Point-Slope Form Given: Point: (x1, y1) Slope: m y - y1 = m(x - x1)
6
y - y1 = m(x - x1) y - 2 = 3(x - 4) Example - Given (4, 2); m = 3
We can distribute the 3 to the x and 4 and then solve for y to change the equation into slope-intercept form.
7
Write an equation for a line through (3, 4) with a slope = 3
Write an equation for a line through (3, 4) with a slope = 3. Put your answer in slope-intercept form.
8
Write an equation for a line through (-2, 2) and (1, 8)
Write an equation for a line through (-2, 2) and (1, 8). Put your answer in slope-intercept form.
9
Write an equation of the line. Put your answer in slope-intercept form.
10
Write an equation of the line. Put your answer in slope-intercept form.
