2.7 Dilations Essential Question: How do you dilate a figure to create a reduction or enlargement?
2
Dilation = Decrease OR increase
Changes the size, but not the shape, of a figure. Dilation = Decrease OR increase Pre-Image and Image must be proportional Therefore, they are “_ _ _ _ _ _ _”
3
To Decrease size of figure:
Steps to Dilate a Figure: To Decrease size of figure: Multiply each coordinate (x and y) by a scale factor smaller than 1 (example: multiply by 1 4 ) To Increase size of figure: Multiply each coordinate (x and y) by a scale factor larger than 1 (example: Multiply by 4)

Example 1 The vertices of a triangle are A (1, 3), B (3, 3), and C (1, 5). Draw the figure and its image after a dilation with the scale factor of 2 (k = 2). Identify the type of dilation: ________________________________

Example 2 The vertices of a triangle are A (3, 9), B (9, 6), and C (6, 3). Draw the figure and its image after a dilation with the scale factor of (k = 1 3 ). Identify the type of dilation: ________________________________

Example 3 The vertices of a rectangle are A (2, 4), B (2, -4), C (-2, -4) and D (-2, 4). Draw the figure and its image after a dilation with the scale factor of ______. (k = _______ ) Identify the type of dilation: ________________________________ Pre- Image Vertices Scale Factor of 𝟏 𝟐 Image Vertices A (2, 4) B (2, -4) C (-2, -4) D (-2, 4)
