1
Heat Energy The Average Kinetic Energy in an object is temperature
Produced by vibrating molecules.
2
Background All matter is made of moving particles
Heat added – molecules move faster Heat removed – molecules slow down.
3
Expansion and Contraction
When an object loses heat it contracts When an object gains heat is expands. In thermometers, Alcohol or mercury expands and contracts.
4
Water the Exception Water is the only substance that expands when it freezes. Powerful enough to break glass and crack rocks. This is called frost action
5
Heat Transfer Heat travels from areas of high temperature to areas of low temperature. 3 ways – Conduction, convection, and radiation.
6
Conduction The transfer of heat by direct contact.
Ex. Metal spoon in a cup of hot tea. The spoon quickly becomes hot by direct contact. Materials that do not transfer heat are called insulators.
7
Convection Transfer of heat by flowing action
Hot air rises, cold air sinks. This is called a convection current.
8
Radiation Transfer of heat through space in a form of waves.
Ex. Heat from the sun Ex. Heat from a light bulb
