1 Sustainable Infrastructure in Hamilton
Engaging tenants of multi-unit residential buildings

2 The Goal: Reduce waste and increase energy efficiency in multi-unit residential buildings

3 3 Step Plan

4 Research Annotated Bibliographies Interviews
Site visit & Tenant feedback composed annotated bibliographies from online resources, past cityhousing projects and other provincial projects. We also met with cityhousing staff to conduct in person interviews. Namely, Chris Shilton (also our City Champion), Kelly Coxson and Leslie Ann. Finally, we visited the site and facilitated a meeting with residents to get suggestions and feedback from the community.

5 2. Workshop Design Merge resident priorities, city sustainability goals & strategic priorities Multi-lingual promotion Securement of supplies Based on resident and staff suggestions, as well as the additional research, we designed a workshop that we thought aligned resident priorities with city sustainability goals and strategic priorities. We promoted the workshop using posters on every floor translated into three languages: english, simplified chinese & arabic, based on a nursing student report which indicated language prevalence in the building. We encouraged residents to bring their own translator if necessary.

6 3. Created Educational Resources & Behavioural Prompts
Multi-lingual card deck Educational Pamphlets Compost bins & liners We designed a deck of 52 playing cards, each with their own sustainability tip. This was based on weekly euchre tournaments that are in the program schedule for 226 Rebecca. We also created educational pamphlets to hand out at the end of the workshop. We put these pamphlets, along with compost liners, inside a green bin which was handed to each resident in attendance.

9 Green Bins and Liners

10 The Session Around 25 residents came to the workshop. We noticed the residents were eager to participate and engage in dialogue about the topics introduced. We were encouraged to come back, and received a lot of positive feedback.

11 Next Steps

12 A manual to detail the process & Future Steps
We created a manual that details everything we learned, from promotion to future steps.
