Journal #1: Non-Conformity
In at least a one page entry, respond to the following: Think of a time when you went against the norm. It can be when you wore a different article of clothing or got a different haircut/style, acted differently than others around you, did something considered embarrassing, etc. Explain the situation so I understand it—Provide context for me. Then describe the following: How did people treat you? Did anyone say anything? If so, what? How did you respond? Afterward, how did you feel? Why? Did the situation make you more likely or less likely to act and do things “differently?” Why?

Internalization of Norms
The process by which a norm becomes part of an individual’s personality In turn this conditions the individual to conform to society’s expectations.

Sanctions Rewards or punishments used to enforce conformity to a society’s norms when internalization doesn’t work. 4 kinds of sanctions Positive Negative Formal Informal

Positive Sanctions An action that rewards a particular kind of behavior. Begins when you are a baby being praised for good behavior or doing the “right” thing. Remember eating with a fork? May take the form of grades, pay raises, cheers, awards etc.

Negative Sanctions A punishment or the threat of punishment used to enforce conformity. Ex. Threat of being towed from No Parking zone. Frowns, ridicule, rejection, fines, imprisonment, death penalty

Formal Sanctions Formal Sanctions are rewards or punishments given by a formal organization (think school, business, government) and maintain social stability. There are 2 types of formal sanctions… Negative formal sanctions= low grades, suspensions, termination from a job, jail/prison, fines. Positive formal sanctions= diplomas, pay raises, promotions, awards, medals

Informal Sanctions An informal sanction is a spontaneous expression of approval or disapproval given by an individual or group. The majority of norms are enforced informally. There are 2 types of informal sanctions… Positive informal sanctions - standing ovations, compliments, smiles, pat on back, gifts Negative informal sanctions - frowns, gossip, rebukes, insults, ridicule, exclusion
