ALDOT & Industry Partnership Training Overview
CEME Presentations and Participation ACPA provided training to ALDOT employees
14
Training - CEME Conference ACPA & Industry Presentations
RCP Standards & Specifications On-Site Installation & Inspection ALDOT and Industry has worked together on many training fronts… Industry invited to and participated in ALDOT CE/ME Conference (major annual ALDOT training event) for past two years In 2014 we were invited to present at the ME CE Conference on two topics –ALDOT RCP Standards and Specification Changes & Offer on site Installation and Inspection Training for all ALDOT District Offices! In winter of 2014/2015 ACPA/Local Industry Provided 12 Seminars across all nine ALDOT District Offices
15
ALDOT & Industry Partnership Training – ACPA Provided
ACPA provided 12 full day training sessions for ALDOT employees 400 employees trained (80% construction, 10% materials and 10% consultants/municipal engineers
16
12 Full Day Training Classes at 9 locations 400 employees trained
Between JAN 13 and March 19th ACPA/Alabama Concrete Pipe Held 12 Day Long Seminars over 9 ALDOT Districts Over 400 Total Attendees 80% ALDOT Const., 10% Materials Test, 10% Consultants or Municipal Engineers

Today’s Agenda 8:00 - 8:30 Registration and Breakfast 8:30 – 9:30 Pipe Fundamentals & Design 9:30 -10:15 Delivery, Handling, Storage, & Inspection Prior to Installation 10:15-10:30 Break 10:30-11:15 Pipe Installation 11:15-12:00 Pre-Cast Box Culvert Installation 12:00-1:00 Lunch & What’s New 1:00 – 1:30 Jeopardy 1:30 – 2:30 Pre-Cast Drainage Structure Installation 2:30 – 2:45 Closing Comments/Questions Partners Help and Learn from each other by engaging in conversation; The training coordinated between ALDOT and Industry provided a forum to compare national installation and inspection standards to ALDOT Standards and Specs and more importantly actual field application of ALDOT Specs and Standards. Industry learned how pipe is actually installed, heard reasonable concerns from ALDOT field inspectors. ALDOT team left recommitted to obtaining proper RCP installations an the importance of good inspection. Actionable outcome of the training – More revisions to RCP Specifications will become effective in early 2016 as result of the discussions at the training events – Specs did not match standard drawing changes, ALDOT wants rubber gaskets used on all round RCP
18
ALDOT & Industry Partnership Training Survey Results
Fundamentals of RCP Installation section was the most useful Precast Box Culvert was second Inspection (Before, during and after) was fourth Training was very beneficial to ALDOT! ALDOT considering offering every 3 years
19
ALDOT & Industry Partnership Education & Benefits
Training – Better installation, emphasis recent changes to industry standards Box Culverts – Precast is typically an option! ALCPA working to educate local installers
20
ALDOT & Industry Partnership Benefits
As Working partners – industry representatives, ACPA, and ALDOT Leaders from Design, Construction, Materials, Bridge Bureaus meet two or three times a year to discuss ALDOT needs. Issues regarding RCP or Box Culverts. Share national issues (AASHTO, Research, ASTM ballots etc.…) We also try and have meaningful discussions at AASHTO Regional Meetings (SASHTO, AASHTO Annual) as well as AASHTO Subcommittee Meetings (SCOM, SCOB, SCOC). These national meetings are excellent opportunities to build professional relationships and identify how as partners we can work together in Alabama to consider and implement needed changes and improvements being promoted and brought forward at the national level. ACPA/Industry
21
OUR Partnership is Working & Benefits ALDOT, ACPA, ALCPA, INSTALLERS, TAXPAYERS
Maintain correct technical specifications and standards Foster Training Partnerships and opportunities for all partners Consistent conversation on national issues and standards

The GDOT Example Working Together To ……………..
22 The GDOT Example Working Together To …………….. 1. Strong Professional Relationships at the GDOT Board Member to GDOT Executive Staff Level to OMAT/District/Construction/Design Staff Level 2. Trusted Industry Knowledge when specifications and standard drawings are being updated 3. Available for training from installations to post installation inspection 4. Re-Occurring Pipe School Scholarships from Georgia Members for GDOT Staff 5. Partners not Adversarial Agencies
23
Strong Professional Relationships
23 Strong Professional Relationships By regularly attending GDOT Board meetings, sponsoring lunches & AASHTO dinners for the GDOT Board the Georgia ACPA members have developed a very strong professional relationship. By hosting Plant Tours with GDOT Executive Staff the Georgia Members have become trusted industry partners.
24
Specifications and Standard Drawings
24 Specifications and Standard Drawings Through several meetings with GDOT Construction staff HDPE Backfill policies were changed when GDOT was presented information that the existing specifications were not being followed by contractors. Also during the Polypro specification review, the Georgia ACPA members had input in the process. While updating fill height tables, GDOT Bridge Design staff worked with the ACPA staff and used ACPA LRFD Fill Height guidelines to update GDOT Standard Drawing Fill Height Tables.
25
Industry Training & Contractor Support
25 Industry Training & Contractor Support Post Installation Inspection started in Georgia several years ago and now contractors are laser videoing all pipes. OMAT staff have directed contractors to used the ACPA’s Post Installation Evaluation and Repair of Installed RCP. The ACPA Georgia Engineer provides support to contractors in using the document. ACPA Engineers and Members provide training to contractors, GDOT staff & consulting engineers throughout the state on a wide variety of topics. Rigid vs. Flexible is a presentation that is typically well received by consulting engineers and contractors and GDOT inspectors are always interested in installation presentation.
26
Pipe School Scholarships
26 Pipe School Scholarships 2014 – One Attendee 2015 – Four Attendee’s 2016 – Three Attendee’s Each year the Georgia Members make it a priority to sponsor as many GDOT staff as feasible to attend pipe school. The pipe school trips are for relationship building and for gaining industry knowledge.
27
27 Partnerships By becoming partners with the State DOT’s and no adversarial organizations, working relationships are better and more is accomplished by everyone!
