Unit 1: Chemistry Lesson 6: Organic and Inorganic Compounds
Science 10 Unit 1: Chemistry Lesson 6: Organic and Inorganic Compounds
2
Objectives By the end of the lesson you should be able to:
Explain the differences between organic and inorganic compounds Recognize organic and inorganic molecules
3
What do these compounds all have in common?
4
Organic Compounds They all contain a Carbon (C) atom!
If a compound has a C in it we call it an ORGANIC COMPOUND So, if there is no C we call it an INORGANIC COMPOUND
5
Recognizing Organics! C is usually bonded to H (maybe an O too)
C is usually represented as a black or grey atom The lines between the atoms represent bonds (usually covalent bonds) as per Lewis Diagrams
6
Hydrocarbons and Alcohols
C and H atoms = hydrocarbons (“ane”, “ene” and “yne” endings) C, H and O = alcohols (“ol” endings) Both are considered: Organic Compounds
7
Inorganic Compounds
