1 Note Taking – Exchange with the Environment
Another reading strategy like close reading with highlighting Helps you to organize important information Allows you to analyze or break down more difficult information or concepts/ideas Helpful for studying Helpful for creating a summary

2 Exchange with the Environment
What is Diffusion? Diffusion in Water The Cell and Osmosis Moving Small Particles Moving Large Particles Endocytosis Exocytosis

3 Exchange with the Environment
Organisms need to move things in/out of cells (food/energy & waste) to stay healthy Healthy cells can divide (grow & reproduce) Diffusion helps cells to accomplish cell division & transfer of things at the cell membrane. What is Diffusion? Particles move from concentrated less concentrated (crowded) (less crowded) Happens in cells Don’t need energy to carry out

4 Exchange with the Environment
Diffusion in Water Osmosis=the movement of water through cell membrane Essential for cells life processes Semipermeable=only certain particles (molecules) move through the cell membrane The Cell and Osmosis Osmosis keeps balance within cell Cells in salty solution = water will leave cell Cells lacking water = absorb water around it

5 Exchange with the Environment
Moving Small Particles Particles move through cell membrane passageways (channels) Passive Transport=no energy needed High concentration low concentration Diffusion and osmosis Active Transport=use energy Low concentration high concentration

6 Exchange with the Environment
Moving Large Particles Endocytosis=active transport Ex. Cells surrounding a protein in a vesicle to move into cell Exocytosis=active transport Ex. Cell surrounds waste in a vesicle to move out of cell
