FAMILY CENTERED CARE AND DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES CO OPTED TO IMPROVE QUALITY IN PAEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNITS BY GRIFFINS ANASI (KRPCCN) & HALIMA CASTA MOHAMMED (KRPCCN)

DEFINATION Family centered care requires nurses to shift from professionally-centered view of health care to a more collaborative model that recognizes families as pivotal in child’s life. It facilitates collaborative parent-professional relationships. Enhancement of FCC will facilitate incorporating developmental stage of a paediatric patient in nursing care. This includes physical and psychosocial skills. Physical development includes growth, fine and gross motor skills while psychosocial development includes cognitive, emotional and social skills.

BACKGROUND The first hospital to care exclusively for children was L’Hopital Des Enfunls-Malades in Paris, in 1802, and USA, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, in 1855 (Kuo D Z, Houtrow AJ et al, 2012). Families of children with cognitive impairment were encouraged to institutionalize their children.

CONT As medicine evolved, in the 1980s, Pediatricians, Researchers and Policymakers heard from families who spoke about what it took to care for their children and importance of partnerships, trust and respect with their children’s health professionals, and benefits of joint decision making. GCH practices FCC Parents are encouraged as far as is possible to stay with their children. We offer unlimited visitation hours to parents. The structural layout of the unit allows for a parent to room in. Parents are provided for easy comfortable chairs that are turned into beds at night.

BENEFITS OF FCC The benefits of having parents around reduces stress/ anxiety for both child and parent, increases milk production in a lactating mother, thus EBM in abundance, therefore faster growth and development of the baby. Honest and complete information from staff Ready to access staff ie consultants nurses and icu team Communication and care coordination improved Emotional expression and support by staff Preservation of integrity of the parent-child relationship Doctors and nurses have strong faith and encourage prayers

CHALLENGES TO FCC Some mothers are skeptical and of the view that nurses should do all the work, because of the many machines and wires connected to the children, and also “that is why they are paid”

RECOMMENDATION Family teaching needs to be enhanced to encourage mothers to partner with nurses in the care of their children in a level they are comfortable with.

CONCULSION Research has proven over the years that if mother- child interaction (mother used globally to mean a nurturer/ carer), is enhanced and child’s developmental stage is considered in inpatient or ambulatory settings, outcome is greatly improved
