1 Explain the theory of plate tectonics.
Bell Ringer Explain the rock cycle. Interactions among Earth’s processes that affect rocks allowing them to change. Explain the theory of plate tectonics. Stated that earth’s crust consists of different plates that interact with each other

2 Plate Boundaries and Features

3 Do the plates move? Do the plates move? If so, why?

4 Causes of Plate Motion  Scientists generally agree that convection occurring in the mantle is the basic driving force for plate movement. Convective flow is the motion of matter resulting from changes in temperature.  Mantle Convection Mantle plumes are masses of hotter-than-normal mantle material that ascend toward the surface, where they may lead to igneous activity. The unequal distribution of heat within Earth causes the thermal convection in the mantle that ultimately drives plate motion.

5 Convection Currents

6 Plate Boundary Activities
Seismic activity – Earthquakes! Volcanism Mountain Building Sea Floor Spreading

7 Divergent Boundaries Also called spreading centers
When two plates move apart Creates new seafloor (seafloor spreading) Causes ocean ridges and rift valleys

8 Convergent Boundaries
Where two plates move together Oceanic-Continental boundaries Oceanic plate goes beneath the continental plate Causes subduction zones, trenches, continental volcanic arcs Continental-Continental Boundaries Two plates collide Forms mountains Oceanic-Oceanic boundaries One oceanic plate goes beneath another oceanic plate Creates volcanic island arcs

9 Transform Boundaries Two plates grind past each other without production and destruction of lithosphere Ex: San Andreas Fault in California

10 Evidence of Plate Tectonic
Paleomagnetism : the permanent magnetization acquired by rock that can be used to determine the location of the magnetic poles at the time it became magnetized Earthquake patterns Ocean Drilling: younger oceanic crust is at the ridge crest and oldest oceanic crust is at the continental margins Hot Spots: supports that the plates move over Earth’s surface
