Central Tendency Grade 12 Essential Math Measurement and Statistics
2
Central Tendency Measures of central tendency are ways to describe a set (or group) of data Mean: the average. Includes all data. Median: the middle number. Mode: the “most popular” number Range: how far from minimum to maximum
3
Mean To calculate the mean: Add up all of the values
Divide by the # of values you have
4
Median To calculate the median:
Line up the values in order from smallest to largest Find the middle value If there are two middle values, add them up and divide by two.
5
Mode To calculate the mode: Count how many times each value appears.
The mode is the value that appears the most (the most popular value)
6
Range To calculate range: Find the maximum and minimum values
Subtract: 𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒=𝑚𝑎𝑥−𝑚𝑖𝑛
7
Example Calculate the mean, median, mode and range of these numbers:
45 48 61 23 56 89 22 18 49 66 38 12 99 17 Calculate the mean, median, mode and range of these numbers:
