Una convención de los mejores mercados
MerCon 2015 Una convención de los mejores mercados
2
Project info On Thursday, November 19, we will hold MerCon We will set up a Spanish-style mercado with different markets. Each group of four will create a unique market, and you will go around the mercado, “shopping” for items. This will be an improvised interpersonal assessment. It will be your second major grade for the term.
3
Prep work We will start by choosing/assigning your group a store/stand (panadería, dulcería, tienda de ropa, etc.). Your final product will be a “storefront” with menus, prices in the currency of my choice , and a selection of items for “sale.”
4
Expectations: Friday, Nov. 13
Get with group. You will get assigned a store. Pick an appealing and creative Spanish name for your store. Remember there’s no ’s in Spanish. Plan out a menu of eight to ten items that are directly related to your store (very specific stores such as panadería and zapatería may take small liberties with what’s “directly related” to your store). Also include four to five items that complement what your store specializes in. You will need to use some extra vocabulary to show off a variety of items in your store. Group members are expected to divide the vocab list so that each group member is looking up a small set of words.
5
Expectations: weekend
If you choose (this is not mandatory), you may purchase a trifold to give your store a more “professional” look. Having a trifold is a group decision, and will not affect your grade. You can use supplies available in the classroom as long as your final product is neatly presented. You may also begin to create products that you will “sell” during the market day.
6
Expectations: Monday, Tuesday
As a group, you will work on setting up the store. Because you will be using a variety of personal vocab, it’s likely that your customers won’t know some of what you are selling. You’ll need to clear pictures accompanying every item on your menu so that your customers can easily identify your products. You will also need a brief owners’ story about how you came to open the store. This is ONE PARAGRAPH using simple Spanish. Two artists should be working on the drawings, while the other work on other elements of the store: prices, labels, story, etc. There should be NO ENGLISH WHATSOEVER on your poster/ storefront.
7
Expectations: Wednesday
Half of the group will be working on a practice conversation while the other half finishes up the store. We will switch after about 15 minutes. The last 15 minutes should be used to practice “buying” and “selling.” Your final “storefront” will include: A menu of items that you are selling. Name of items in Spanish Picture of the item Price Brief owners’ story Actual items for sale. These could be hand-made or store- bought, or symbolic representations.
8
Expectations: Thursday (major grade)
You will have about 10 minutes to set up your store and practice what you can say. Two people will stay at the store while the other two shop around. After about 15 minutes we will switch. Everyone will be expected to play both the roles of the shopper and the seller. You will speak entirely in Spanish all class period You will be graded on the interpersonal rubric, and any use of English will result in reduction of points. Last 10 minutes of class will be for cleanup.
