2 Different types of aid There are different types of aid that may be offered to countries needing assistance: Emergency aid: Following an unprecedented emergency caused by natural disaster or conflict Bilateral aid: Aid given from the government of one country to the government of another Multilateral aid: Aid given by the governments of many countries and dispensed via international organisations such as the UN

3 The role of the United Nations
Established in 1945, the UN is committed to preserving peace through the international cooperation of 192 countries When a country becomes a member of the UN, it is required to accept the obligations of the UN Charter

4 The UN Charter The Charter has 4 main purposes:
To maintain international peace and security To develop friendly relations among nations To cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights To be a centre for harmonising the actions of nations

International peace and security Human rights Humanitarian action Economic and social development

6 World Health Organization (WHO)
The core function of WHO is to direct and coordinate matters pertaining to health within the UN system: Providing leadership on global health issues Research to improve the health and wellbeing of all individuals Assist countries in addressing public health issues, including monitoring and assessment of health trends and patterns

7 WHO uses a 6 point agenda to improve public health:
Promoting development Fostering health security Strengthening health systems Harnessing research, information and evidence Enhancing partnerships Improving performance

8 AusAID AusAID is the Australian Agency for International Development
AusAID has had the responsibility of managing the Australian Government’s overseas aid program and delivering development initiatives since 1974 A federally funded organisation with the overall aim of reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development in developing countries, with a particular focus on our neighbouring countries in the Asia-Pacific region

9 There are 4 overriding themes:
Accelerating economic growth Fostering functioning and effective states Investing in people Promoting regional stability

10 Areas of focus include:
Disability Education Environment Food security Gender Governance Health: HIV/AIDS, pandemics Human rights Infrastructure Millennium Development Goals Regional stability Rural development Water and sanitation
