1 EFB 496 Ecology of Wetland Plant Communities
(3 credit hours) Alex Petzke (Week 1) EFB Ph.D. Student and Donald J. Leopold* (Week 2) Distinguished Teaching Professor and Chair (until March 1) Department of Environmental and Forest Biology SUNY-ESF Syracuse, NY *and author of Wildflowers of the Adirondacks, Johns Hopkins Press, in press

2 EFB 496 Ecology of Wetland Plant Communities
One to two hours of lecture, and eight to nine hours of field work and discussion each day for two weeks A field  course to develop skills and confidence in determining wetland plants found in natural communities of the Northeast and used in wetland delineation

3 WEEK 1: Mineral Soil Wetlands and Aquatic Communities and Their Flora (Petzke)
Monday Introduction to wetlands of the Adirondack Region; ferns and fern-allies Tuesday Graminoids: grasses, sedges and rushes Wednesday Woody species of these wetlands Thursday Emergent, free-floating, and submersed species of lakes and ponds Friday Review of species covered first week

4 WEEK 2: Natural Peatland Communities and Their Flora (Leopold)
Monday Vascular species of acidic peatlands (bogs, poor fens) Tuesday Vascular species of minerotrophic peatlands (medium and rich fens) Wednesday Wetland species on poorly drained, drastically disturbed sites Thursday Review of species from weeks 1 and 2 Friday Comprehensive field (closed book) and laboratory (open book) exams

6 skunk cabbage dwarf mistletoe northern pitcher plant cinnamon fern black chokeberry black ash closed gentian cardinal flower northern white-cedar Labrador tea grass pink podgrass

7 This course should be especially valuable to those:
Contemplating a career in wetland sciences Considering field-based graduate studies Curious about the natural history, cultural ecology, and ethnobotany of some of the most beautiful and important plant species in the Northeast Interested in understanding the significant ecological function and high conservation value of wetlands
