Matter can be pure or mixed
A substance is pure if it contained only one type of atom Elements, compounds, and mixtures are all substances

Cannot separate an element into other substances. Examples: gold, silver, hydrogen

Compounds A substance that consists of two or more different types of atoms bonded together Examples: Sodium + chlorine= table salt

Mixtures A combination of different substances that remain the same individual substance and can be separated by physical means Example: Fruit salad
