1 Unit 3 Vocabulary

2 Ordered Pair Two numbers written in a certain order. Usually written in parentheses like this: (4,5)

3 Discrete A type of data is discrete if there are only a finite number of values possible or if there is a space on the number line between each 2 possible values.

4 Continuous line or curve
A line or curve that extends without a break or irregularity.

5 Independent/Dependent Variables
Independent Variable: The input variable of a function Dependent Variable: The output variable of a function The independent variable is the “x” values. The dependent variable is the “y” values.

6 Function A relation in which every element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range; that is, for every value of x, there is exactly one value of y.

7 What’s happening to the end of the graph??
End Behavior The appearance of a graph as it is followed farther and farther in either direction. What’s happening to the end of the graph??

8 Function Notation A way to name a function using f(x) instead of y NOT

9 Linear Equation An equation that can be written in the form of ax + by = c, where a, b, and c are rational numbers; can also be written as y = mx + b, in which m is the slope, b is the y-intercept, and the graph is a straight line. The solutions to the linear equation are the infinite set of points on the line.

10 X and Y intercepts The x-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses the x axis. ( i.e. where the y value equals 0 ) The y-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses the y axis. ( i.e. where the x value equals 0 )

11 Solution Set The set of ordered pairs that represent all of the solutions to an equation or a system of equations.

12 Domain In the ordered pairs: (1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 9), (6, 11)
The x values The values of the independent variable The input values In the ordered pairs: (1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 9), (6, 11) The domain is: 1, 3, 5, 6

13 Range In the ordered pairs: (1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 9), (6, 11)
The y values The values of the dependent variable The output values In the ordered pairs: (1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 9), (6, 11) The range is: 2, 4, 9, 11
