2 Naming an Acid Consider the acid “HX” where H is hydrogen and X is the anion. RULE #1 When name of anion (X) ends in “ide” Acid name begins with “hydro” Followed by stem of anion Followed by “ic acid” Example: HCl

3 Naming an Acid Consider the acid “HX” where H is hydrogen and X is the anion. RULE #2 When name of anion (X) ends in “ite” Name begins with stem of anion Followed by “ous acid” Example: HNO2

4 Naming an Acid Consider the acid “HX” where H is hydrogen and X is the anion. RULE #3 When name of anion (X) ends in “ate” Name begins with stem of anion Followed by “ic acid” Example: HClO3

5 Practice Naming! You try: H2SO4 HBr H2SO3 H3PO4 HClO HClO4

6 Naming Bases Name bases exactly like you would any other ionic compound. Example: NaOH = sodium hydroxide
