Begin with an opening sentence that captures the reader’s attention A statement that directly addresses the essay prompt An important fact or detail A relevant quotation A question

Your goal is to hook your reader’s attention right way and make them want to learn more about the topic

DO NOT: Use “I”!!! There is no need to announce anything using I “In this paper I will…” “I believe…” “I think…” “I feel…” DON’T USE I….EVER!!! 

Finally, end your introduction with a clear thesis statement Make sure your thesis outlines the three main ideas you will be discussing in your essay Use a semicolon (or semicolons) to separate independent clauses in your thesis statement DO NOT write “The thesis of this paper is…”
