1 Wavelength, Energy Frequency Calculations Intro to the Flame Test Lab

2 Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm-Up
Explain: Energy, Wavelength, Frequency Calculations Elaborate: Calculation Practice Explore/Explain: Flame Test Lab Data Table Evaluate: Exit Ticket

3 Warm-Up What is the difference between a continuous and emission spectrum? Write the abbreviated electron configuration for the following elements/ions: F- Fe

4 Objective Today I will be able to:
Correctly calculate the wavelength, energy and frequency of light emitted from an atom. Design a proper data table for the flame test lab.

5 Homework Wear closed toe shoes tomorrow
Electrons Quiz – Wednesday, October 29 STEM Fair Conclusion Due November 14

7 Energy, Wavelength, Frequency Calculation Notes

8 Electromagnetic Spectrum

9 Calculating Wavelength and Frequency
C= 3.0 x 108 m/s (speed of light) λ = wavelength (meters) ν = frequency (Hertz or 1/seconds)

10 Calculating Energy and Frequency
Planck came up with the equation E= hν E = Energy (Joules) h = Planck’s Constant 6.626 x J*s ν = frequency (Hertz or 1/seconds)

11 Calculation Examples

12 Energy, Wavelength, Frequency Practice
Complete the practice at your desk. Ask Ms. Ose for help if you have questions.

13 Flame Test Lab Introduction

14 Flame Test Lab Safety Must wear goggles, aprons, closed toe shoes, tie long hair back, no baggy clothing 9 stations that you will rotate through Must follow Ms. Ose’s instructions When directed you will Move to the station Turn on the gas and light the Bunsen burner Ms. Ose will turn out the lights You will place 1 wooden splint soaked in a metallic salt in the flame and observe the color change Ms. Ose will turn the lights on You will record your observations on your worksheet When Ms. Ose says so, you will rotate Failure to follow the directions or any horseplay will result in removal from the lab.

15 Exit Ticket What will I do to be safe and successful in lab tomorrow?
