UAlbany Compliance Corner
March 2019 Student-Athlete Edition Compliance Trivia Joe Buckets, a basketball student-athlete at UAlbany, is having a standout season for the Great Danes. One of Joe’s family members decides to take advantage of the situation and profit off of Joe’s success by selling shirts with his name and picture. After a couple of weeks of the shirts being sold, Joe becomes aware of the situation. However, since he did not give permission for his name or picture to be used and he is not taking in any of the money being made he does not take any action. Is this a violation? March Madness Sports Wagering Reminder Just a friendly reminder, with the NCAA Basketball tournament upcoming, that it is impermissible to engage in gambling activities as they relate to intercollegiate or professional sporting events. Remember: ENTRY FEE + PRIZE = VIOLATION Social Media Interaction You may not contact a prospective student-athlete at the direction of a coaching staff member in an attempt to persuade them to attend UAlbany. This includes Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, etc.

Bylaw states that If a student-athlete's name or picture appears on commercial items (e.g., T-shirts or sweatshirts) or is used to promote a commercial product sold by an individual or agency without the student-athlete's knowledge or permission, the student-athlete (or the institution acting on behalf of the student-athlete) is required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics.
