Why do cells need to divide?
9
Examine and sketch Use the microscope slides to examine a cell half way through division. Can you sketch this in your book? Can you label the parts of the cell? Can you use your picture to suggest how the cell divides?
11
Up to 1.13 Answer the first few questions from the clip.
12
A cell has 2 versions of each chromosome – one from each parent.
We call this type of cell diploid.
13
To prepare for cell division, each chromosome is copied.
14
The chromosomes line up in the centre of the cell.
15
The two copies of each chromosome are pulled apart by spindle fibres.
16
The chromosomes move to different sides of the cell.
The cell begins to split in two.
17
The cell completely splits in two.
There are now two cells, these are called daughter cells. Each cell is genetically identical to each other, and to the original parent cell.
18
Cut out the pictures and put them in the correct order.
Try and write a caption for each stage to explain what is happening.
19
Where does mitosis happen?
Most of the cells in the body divide by mitosis. Can you think of any exceptions? Some organisms can reproduce by mitosis. This is called asexual reproduction. Examples include yeast and the malaria parasite.
20
What happens when mitosis goes wrong?
Usually cells only divide at certain times. Sometimes this control stops working and cells divide uncontrollably – this is cancer.
21
Complete the questions on the sheet.
