1 73 Close Reading and Marking the Text
Close reading is a process in which a reader “figure out” a high quality text by reading and discussing. In order to “figure out” a text, readers should go through the text more than once to increase understanding. The first read through is to gain an understanding of the author’s purpose and the main idea. The second read through is to highlight and mark the text The third read through is to find evidence in order to support your opinions and ideas and/or to answer questions. Here are some helpful symbols to mark the text while doing a close reading! ? = I have a question/I don’t understand ! = Surprising/important part of the story C = Making a connection/This reminds me of…. E = Evidence = Main idea of the text/paragraph = Love this point/favorite = Unknown vocabulary WC = The author uses excellent word choice/figurative language
