Your Internal Dialogue
The big question…WHY do you want this role/opportunity? You must be able to clearly articulate your thoughts. Do you feel as though your experience is well rounded? What have you done to be a good fit for this role? What are your strengths? What do you still need exposure to? It is understood and expected that parts of this role/opportunity may be challenging for you. What aspects make you uncomfortable? Only you know you! If there is something that makes you nervous, own it and move on! TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF

Preparing for an Interview
PREPARE and PRACTICE! What do you know about the role/company/opportunity? Why do you want this opportunity? Why are you the best candidate? What distinguishes you? Think of 1-2 questions you might want to ask the interviewer regarding their experience with the company. Behavioral Interviewing Your past actions are a good predictor of future behavior. Tell me about a time…. (Be specific) LISTEN to the question!!! Take a minute to think about the question before responding. Preparing for an Interview Just like preparing for a test, it is important that you take the time to prepare for an interview. As the saying goes, “You only have one chance to make a first impression.”

Preparing Scenarios Juggling multiple priorities
Demonstrating leadership Accomplishing a goal Supporting the community Building a team approach Adjusting to group projects with varying personalities Resolving issues/problem solving Learning something new Failing at something Be prepared with examples to highlight who you are and what you have accomplished. Having the “stories” ready will help you respond to behavioral based interview questions.

The big day Are you prepared?
Do you have everything you need? (props, copies of your resume, etc..) Take a minute in the lobby or in your car to “ground” yourself. Breathe and relax. Make your first impression! Interview Do’s & Dont’s Eye contact with each person on the interview panel. Firm but not hulk-like handshake Dress more conservatively than you think is normal. SMILE Avoid words like “yah” or “un huh” and say yes or no.

Preparing for a presentation
What is your topic? What message do you want to communicate? Have you timed yourself? Do you have props? Do you need a SmartBoard or projector? If so, does the room you are meeting in have one? Do you have transitions from one idea to the next? Are you checking for understanding? How will you know if your audience is engaged? What will you do it they are not? Are you using any of the tools you have been taught through education? (repeat back to me, do as I do, show me your work, asking for a volunteer, etc…) Practice, practice, practice

Wrapping up Thank the panel/interviewer for their time and the opportunity. Continue to have eye contact and smile. Ask if there are any other questions you can answer for them. Ask for business cards. Send a handwritten “Thank You” note.
