PDPs ...a bit of a muddle
2
ARCP advice from School of General practice –summer 2014
Trainees are expected to add at least one PDP entry into the ePortfolio every six months in addition to those generated through the ESR Trainees should edit the PDP entries which have been generated through the ESR to make them personal and SMART
3
Where can PDP entries come from?
Be written by trainee in PDP section Be ‘promoted’ by trainee from learning log Be generated by ES in ‘Competence areas- ES feedback’ ‘Agreed learning plans’ (3) at end of ES review are automatically promoted to the PDP section.
6
What makes a good PDP entry?
Aims related to identified learning needs Relevant Challenging/stimulating/motivating Clear aim relating to knowledge, skills or attitudes Evidence for learning can be collected Contains SMART objectives
7
What will my Educational Supervisor want to see?
Active use PDP entries that confirm reflective practice and an understanding of the PDP process. A spread between completed entries, entries being worked on and entries that will be started on in the future.
8
What goes in my learning log and what goes in my PDP?
Larger aims Aims that require changes in knowledge, skills or attitudes using several sources or over a period of time Important aims that you want to be reminded about.
9
PDPs, a pragmatic rule set
For each 6m post the PDP should contain 3 entries in addition to those derived from ‘agreed learning plans’ Where appropriate the PDP entry should fulfil the SMART criteria. PDP entries should deal with larger learning aims using multiple sources of learning over a period of time Entries derived from the ES report should be edited by the trainee to make them personal and SMART A good starting point is “what do I want to learn during this post?”
