1 Tobacco and Addiction

2 Nicotine All forms of tobacco contain the drug nicotine
Nicotine enters the blood through tissues in the mouth and lungs and reach the brain within seconds of using tobacco. Once in the brain Nicotine molecules attach to receptors on nerve cells. Once attached the brain sends chemical messages to the body The messages cause the effects of nicotine like increases blood pressure and heart rate

3 Nicotine Nicotine is a powerful drug so only a small amount is needed to produce an effect. Most common effect of first time users are dizziness, nausea and vomiting because the body is not used to the effects As the body gets used to nicotine the effects become less obvious, but more dangerous.

4 Tolerance and Dependence
The more a person uses a drug the less effect is has. TOLERANCE- is the process of the body getting used to a drug. As tolerance builds a person will need more tobacco to feel the effects. This will increase the how often and how much someone will smoke. The brain physically changes by adding more nicotine receptors. The increased receptors decrease the effectiveness of nicotine. More nicotine is needed to have the effects of nicotine occur.

5 Tolerance and Dependence
The physical brain chance causes a person to become dependent on the drug. PHYSICAL DEPENDENCE- is a state in which the body needs a drug to function normally. With tobacco dependence people need to use tobacco just to feel normal. Most tobacco users develop physical dependence quickly. DRUG ADDICTION- is the inability to control one’s use of a drug.

6 Psychological Dependence
PSYCHOLOGICAL DEPENDECE- is a state in which you think that you need a drug in order to function. Drug addiction effects the mind as well as the body. Some tobacco users think that they need it to feel energetic or relaxed. For some just holding and lighting cigarettes causes a high amount of pleasure.

7 Withdrawal WITHDRAWAL- is the way in which the body responds when a dependent person stops using a drug. When tobacco users are dependent on nicotine they feel uncomfortable with out tobacco. Withdrawal can cause anxiousness, irritability or tiredness. Can also cause headaches and poor concentration. Once tolerance is built up some may use tobacco just to avoid withdrawal.

8 Different Responses to Tobacco
Tobacco will affect everyone differently Some become addicted to nicotine after a short period of time. Other may try on cigarette and never smoke again. Some may be able to quit on the first try while others cant quit even with serious health conditions.
