To solve problems using algebra, you must often translate phrases about numbers into expression containing variables. **Remember expressions do not have an equal sign**

8. Concept Be careful with phrases involving subtraction
The phrase “5 less than x”
Translates x – 5 not 5 – x
The phrase “5 more than x”
Translates as either 5 + x or x + 5

3 less than half of x
Half the difference between x and 3

10. Example Eight times a number The product of three and a number
Five more than a number
