To answer any questions about KS2 SATs
Discuss / share ideas about how you as a parent can help your child at home

3. What are KS2 SATs? Standard Assessment Tests
All children have to be tested before they go to high school
Provide assessment information for high schools
Purpose – assess whether pupils have reached age expectations before they leave primary school

4. What is expected of Y6 children?
The new system of assessing children’s progress says that each child should have reached ‘Secure Year 6’ when they leave Primary School.
In the SATs they will be expected to achieve a score of 100.

5. How is SATs week organised?
A timetable is issued to school, telling us on which days/sessions tests must be administered.
All children must sit the tests at the same time.
Test papers can only be opened 1 hour before the tests begin.
Tests are completed in the canteen, or in a small group.
Children are divided into groups for test administration to ensure they are properly supported and feel secure.

7. During SATs week:
Please ensure that your child is in school every day during SATs week.
Ensure that they are in school on time
We will be offering a breakfast snack before the tests on each day.
Please don’t book anything during this week e.g. doctor’s appointments, holidays etc
If your child is ill, let us know immediately.

8. English SATs English SATs consist of:
A grammar, punctuation and spelling test (SPaG)
A reading test

9. Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation
45 minute test on grammar.
Worth 50 marks.
Spelling test is separate.
Worth 20 marks out of 70.
Can affect the overall level obtained.

10. How can parents help with SPaG?
We will be sending home a piece of grammar homework each week from one of the new books that school has bought to help your child learn/revise. This will be expected to be completed on the day it is sent home and returned the following day as it will be continued in class.
Spelling homework – spelling lists / rules every week – these are vitally important.

11. Reading 1 hour to read booklet and answer questions.
There will be 3 unrelated texts and sets of questions which focus on different difficulty levels.
There are a variety of questions to be answered in different ways
Children cannot have any adult help in this test

12. How can parents help with reading?
Ensure your child reads every night!
Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction.
Try to ask them questions about the text – use the book talk at the back of their reading record book!!
Help them with the different skills of reading, especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text.
Speed reading

13. Writing is no longer a written test during SATs week
Writing is no longer a written test during SATs week. It is teacher assessed over the whole year.
In May we will be asked to find 6-8 pieces of evidence (writing), which illustrates the age expectation we have awarded each child.

14. How can parents help with writing?
Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types
Vocabulary – encourage your child to find out the meaning of unknown words to widen their use of vocabulary.
Encouraging your child to complete all homework and discussing their work with them.

15. Two reasoning test papers
Mathematics
Mathematics SATs consist of:
An Arithmetic test.
This is a 30 minute test in which pupils are required to answer 36 questions. The paper is worth 40 marks.
Two reasoning test papers
Paper 1 and Paper 2
These are 40 minute tests with 35 marks each. These papers test the application of the skills taught in lessons.
Children can no longer use a calculator in any of the tests.

16. Some questions are worth one mark and therefore accuracy is important.
Other questions are worth two marks and even if the answer is wrong, a mark may be given for correct working.
Teachers may read questions in all papers to pupils if asked. We encourage this.

17. TIMES TABLES!!! How can parents help with Maths?
Support with homework – not just helping with the Maths but reading the question can really help.
Children will be bringing home a maths revision/workbook each week, which must be completed that night and returned the next day to continue in school.

Help your child to check their work through – this will help them to spot mistakes that can sometimes be easily fixed.

Take an active interest in what your child is doing both at school and at home.
