2 ANIMAL EVOLUTION Classification of animals

3 Nowadays, scientists know that the first animals on Earth were fish and that the rest of animals we can see today descend from the evolution of those animals. CLASSIFICATION OF ANIMALS Carnivores: eat meat Herbivores: eat plants Omnivores: eat plants and meat ANIMAL EVOLUTION

4 2. FISH What do fish look like? How do fish live?

5 WHAT DO FISH LOOK LIKE? TAIL
Some fish have TEETH like the piranha. Other don’t have teeth, like the swordfish. GILLS are small openings on both sides of their head that are used to breath. Fish have FINS which help them move through the water. Fish are covered in SCALES. TAIL

6 HOW DO FISH LIVE? Most fish are CARNIVORES like the shark.
Some fish are HERBIVORES like the salmon. Others are OMNIVORES like the goldfish. Fish are OVIPAROUS

7 3. ANPHIBIANS What do anphibians look like? How do anphibians live?
The life cycle of a frog

8 WHAT DO ANPHIBIANS LOOK LIKE?
Their TONGUE is LONG and STICKY. They use ir to catch their food. They have MOIST SKIN. They have four LIMBS. Some anphibians have a TAIL.

9 HOW DO ANPHIBIANS LIVE? NEWT TOAD SALAMANDER
All anphibians are OVIPAROUS. Nearly all anphibians are CARNIVORES. They eat insects and spiders. When they are young, most anphibians live in water and they breath through GILLS. Adult anphibians breath through LUNGS or through their SKIN.

10 1 2 4 5 3 THE LIFE CYCLE OF A FROG = METAMORPHOSIS
An adult frog lays many EGGS in the water. A TADPOLE is born from each egg. They breath through gills and live in water. Over time, the tadpole develops LEGS. It becomes a FROGLET. Its tail gets smaller and its legs stronger. It becomes an ADULT FROG. Now, it has lungs to breath outside the water. 1 2 4 5 3

11 4. REPTILES What do reptiles look like? How do reptiles live?

12 WHAT DO REPTILES LOOK LIKE?
Most reptiles have four short limbs (like feet). However, some of them, like snakes have no feet. Reptiles are covered by dry scaly skin. Some reptiles, like the turtle, have a hard shell. WHAT DO REPTILES LOOK LIKE?

13 HOW DO REPTILES LIVE? CHAMELEON SNAKE CROCODILE TOAD
They are OVIPAROUS. Nearly all reptiles are CARNIVORES. Only a few are HERBIVORES, like the iguana. All reptiles breath through LUNGS.

14 5. BIRDS What do birds look like? How do birds live?

15 BLUE TIT SWALLOW HUMMINGBIRD Some birds VULTURE

16 WHAT DO BIRDS LOOK LIKE? Birds have 4 LIMBS:
They have a BEAK but they don’t have TEETH. They have WINGS to fly altough the ostrich, for example, can’t fly. Birds breath through their LUNGS. Birds have 4 LIMBS: 2 LEGS or FEET (covered in SCALES) 2 WINGS Their body is covered in FEATHERS.

17 HOW DO BIRDS LIVE? EAGLE CANARY OSTRICH TOAD
Some birds are CARNIVORES (like the eagle) Other birds are HERBIVORES (like the canary) Some birds are OMNIVORES (like the ostrich) All birds are OVIPAROUS. They build a NEST and look after the eggs.

18 6. MAMMALS What do mammals look like? How do mammals live?

19 WHAT DO MAMMALS LOOK LIKE?
Most mammals have a TAIL. They have TEETH and LIPS. They have 4 LIMBS. They have HAIR or FUR. Even dolphins and whales have hair. Female mammals produce milk through MAMARY GLANDS.

20 HOW DO MAMMALS LIVE? DOLPHIN Aquatic mammals have FINS. BAT
The only mammal which flies. KANGAROO Mammals that walk on the Earth have LEGS. TOAD Mammals can be: CARNIVORES (lions) HERBIVORES (cows) or OMNIVORES (human beings). All mammals breath trough LUNGS. Nearly all mammals are VIVIPAROUS.

21 QUESTIONS

22 Complete the table. Body covering Breathing How are they born? Fish
Scales Anphibians Oviparous Reptiles Lungs Birds Mammals

23 What are the differences and similarities between these two animals?

24 ORDER THE CYCLE AND MATCH WITH THE CORRECT NUMBER.
Its tail gets smaller and its legs get stronger. It walks onto land and becomes and adult toad. A tadpole hatches from each egg. Adult frogs lay eggs in the water.

25 ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:
Do fish have legs? Do reptiles have dry scaly skin? Are mammals oviparous? Do anphibians lay eggs? Do birds breath in the water?
