Evolution Test Review Chapter 6 Sections 3 & 4 Review Packet

2 6:3 Darwin’s Theory (pg. 1) B. Fertile Offspring
False; The origin of species B. Adaptations True a. Artificial selection False; domestic C. fossil False; MORE False; Galapagos

3 Page 2 Darwin was a naturalist, and he studied organisms around the world. He spent time on the Galapagos islands studying finches and proposed that they came from one common ancestor, but evolved into different species over the years. Evolution is the process of change over time. When species compete, they compete over Resources such as food, water, and shelter. Due to lack of resources, When a species over produces offspring, they cannot all survive.

4 Page 2 Variations in a species allows for natural selection to occur. Only the fittest survive, reproduce, and pass on their genes to their offspring. Darwin’s ideas are classified as scientific theory because it is a well tested concept that is supported by evidence. Species Adaptation Theory Natural selection

5 Page 2 Species Natural selection Adaptation Variation Theory species

6 Page 3 The bones of a bird’s wing and a seal’s flipper are similar, but different in size. They share a common origin, but function differently. Scientists can look at the DNA of the bird and the seal and see how similar the dna sequences are.

8 Page 5 Factors that affect natural selection are overproduction, variation, and competition. Examples will vary based on the factor chosen. One similarity between natural selection and artificial selection is that traits are passed down to the organisms offspring. Homologous structures similar
