1 Entry Routine Objective: SWBAT evaluate functions, graph functions, and solve equations. Quote of the Day: “Legacy. What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.” Lin Manuel Miranda Do Now: What is a relationship? What makes a relationship good? What makes a relationship bad?

2 Evaluating and Solving

3 Socratic Circle Move your desk into circle
Stand and deliver when speaking Use sentence stems when sharing Don’t talk over others

4 Functions Functions are, quite simply, collections of operations
They can consist of 1 or more operations The input of a function is the number which is adjusted or operated upon The output of a function is the resulting number after applying the operators Functions can be thought of as machines which receive input and generate output based on a strict, unchanging set of math operations A good function (or a good relationship) has only one output for every one input

5 Functions Example

6 Functions Example *Tip: 0 is a great number to start exploring functions with*

7 Functions Example *Tip: 0 is a great number to start exploring functions with*

8 Functions in Concept Functions can operate on whole number lines
This is what generates graphs

9 Solving Equations Solving is the opposite of evaluating
Solving entails finding something missing, rather than calculating what is already there Since evaluating goes down the order of operations, Solving goes up the order of operations

10 Solving Equations with Inverse Operations
Locate the missing variable Work up the order of operations, using inverse operations to remove operations

11 Solving Equations with Inverse Operations
Locate the missing variable Work up the order of operations, using inverse operations to remove operations

12 Exit Ticket 1 Sketch a graph of the following function. Make sure your graph includes 3 or more points. 2 In your own words, what is a function? 3 Solve for the missing variable.
