Phases of Matter
2
Solid Phase Have a definite shape. Have a definite volume.
The particles can not move therefore can not be compressed.
3
Liquid Phase Particles in liquid are free to move. No definite shape.
Takes the shape of the container. Have a definite volume. Can not be compressed.
4
Liquids Cont’d Liquids have a property called viscosity.
Viscosity is the resistance of a liquid to flow. Ex. Honey has a high viscosity.
5
Gas Phase Does not have a definite shape or volume.
Fills all available space. Particles of gas spread far apart from one another. Can be compressed.
6
Gases Cont’d Particles in a gas are in constant movement.
All these particles flying around, creates a pressure on the container.
7
Plasma Phase Rare on Earth. Stars and the sun contain a lot of plasma.
Very high in energy and dangerous to living things.
