2. What are Cells? The basic building block of life.
Remember: all living things are made of cells!

3. Robert Hooke
While looking at cork Robert Hooke observed that it had empty spaces contained by walls (like little rooms). He called these spaces cells.

4. Anton van Leeuwenhoek
First person to observe live cells under a microscope.

German Botanist who stated that the different parts of the plant are made of cells

6. Schleiden “Schliding down the beanstalk” Plants are made of cells

7. Theodor Schwann
German biologist, reached the same conclusion as Schleiden but in regards to animal tissue: animal tissue also made up of cells

8. Schwann “Ridin a swan” Animals are made of cells

9. Robert Brown
English botanist; discovered the nucleus in plant cells

10. Rudolph Virchow
“Omnis cellula e cellula”: all cells develop only from existing cells
