1 Today is Monday, December 3, 2012
Homework: Read Chapter 7, Lessons 1 and 2 Warm UP: In table groups, discuss the following: “You have all interacted with water. You drink it, you wash your hands with it. Have you ever considered how heavy water is? Discuss whether or not you think the following types of water are heavier, lighter, or all the same weight: - Saltwater - Freshwater - Hot water - Cold water”

2 Goal for Today SWBAT demonstrate the ability to describe properties and features of water in oceans by discussing the affects of salinity and temperature on ocean currents.

3 All oceans are connected. PacificAtlanticIndianSouthern Arctic
Water on earth is all a part of the hydrosphere (hydro = water, sphere = part) Makes up about ¾ of the earth’s surface 97% of water is in oceans; 3% not in oceans Which ocean are we the closest to in Shanghai? All oceans are connected. PacificAtlanticIndianSouthern Arctic

4 Salinity – the measure of how salty water is
Where does the salt come from? Rivers dissolve small amounts of salts from rocks and soil and carry it to the ocean Some places in oceans more salty than others Less salty – where rivers pour into oceans More salty – warmer places because water evaporates leaving behind salt Salt water is heavier than freshwater Some ocean currents caused by cold, salty water sinkingcauses water to move when sinks

5 Temperature Water tends to be warmer (30C) around the equator and colder in the poles (-2C) Currents help to circulate warm and cold water around the oceans. Cold water is heavier than warm water Currents also influenced by cold water sinking and warm water rising. The movement, along with salinity, influences the currents

6 Resources from the ocean – salt, drinking water (but process is very expensive), food, magnesium

7 Closing it up…. In table groups, discuss what kinds of resources do you use from the ocean?
