Parts of a Division Problem
Divisor – the number outside of the division symbol Dividend – the number inside the Quotient – the answer to the division problem Answer 3 ) 20

Steps for a Division Problem
Divide – ask yourself, “How many divisors are there in the dividend?” Multiply – multiply your answer from step 1 by the divisor. Subtract – subtract the answer from step 2 from the dividend. Remainder – if the answer from step 3 is not zero, whatever is left is your remainder.

Sample Problem 6 R 2 3 ) 2 0 - 1 8 2 And that, my friends is how you do a division with remainder problem. Step 2 – multiply the 6 you just got by the divisor, 3. Step 3 – Subtract the 18 you just got from the dividend, 20. Step 4 – whatever your answer to your subtraction step is will be your remainder. Step 1 – How many 3’s are there in 20? 7 is too many…7 x 3 = 21, so let’s try 6…6 x 3 = 18
