Research and read a poem about winter. Is it effective and why? Use your list to help. Write your own poem about a winter’s day. Aim to use features from your ‘effective poem’ list. Write your poem as a sonnet using iambic pentametre. Lesson 2 Find the definitions for: Senses Metaphor Atmosphere Personification Create a senses mind-map based on a snowy forest, planning your ideas. Consider how you can use language devices, like metaphor and personification. Write a detailed description of a snowy forest using language devices, aiming to create a tranquil atmosphere. Include elements of narrative fiction in which something unexpected happens and you change the atmosphere. Lesson 3 What are the features of a newspaper report? Mind-map them. Find a newspaper report and annotate it considering how language is used to inform. This could be an online or print version. Write your own newspaper report detailing the snow day closure of Hyland’s School. Transform your report into an opinion article arguing for or against snow days. Remember: You should also be reading for 30 minutes every day.
