1
States of Matter 3 Main states of Matter
Solid Liquid Gas Different phases relate to the speed of motion of the particles Speed of particles relates to temperature Faster when hotter Slower when colder
2
Solid Slowest Moving Particles Definite shape Definite volume
Particles are very close Particles vibrate in place Very low compressibility (you can’t squeeze them)
3
Types of Solids Crystal Amorphous – Repeated bonding pattern
Ex: Diamond, Salt Amorphous – No internal shape Ex: Glass, wax
4
Types of Solid Heterogeneous Has structure, but mixed Ex: Wood, bone
5
Liquids Medium Moving Particles Not definite shape Definite volume
Particles are very close Particles move around each other Low compressibility
6
Viscosity Viscosity is a property of liquids
Liquids with high viscosity move slowly Ex: Oil Low Viscosity – Moves quickly Ex: Water Viscosity gets lower when liquids get hotter
