TEST: Thursday, November 12th
WARM UP INSTRUCTIONS: The following two shapes have the same area. What is the perimeter of the first rectangle? A = 8x2 + 4x 2x+2 4x - 1 Agenda for November 5th: Warm-Up Word Problems Quiz Correction Practice Test – Inequalities TEST: Thursday, November 12th Learning Intention: Today we will Solve word problems that involve equivalent areas Explore inequalities with a range of solutions
2
Step 1: Find area of first rectangle
A = l x w A= (4x – 1)(2x +2) A= 8x2 +8x – 2x -2 A = 8x2 +6x - 2 Step 2: Make the two areas equal and solve for x 8x2 +6x – 2 = 8x2 + 4x 8x x2 6x – 2 = 4x -6x x -2 = - 2x x = 1
3
Step 3: Substitute x = 1 to find dimensions of rectangle Length = 4x – 1 = 4(1) – 1 = 3 Width = 2x +2 = 2(1) + 2 = 4 Step 4: Find the perimeter of rectangle 1 𝑃=2𝑙+2𝑤 𝑃 = 2(3) + 2 (4) 𝑃 = 6 +8 𝑃 = 14 units The perimeter of the first rectangle is 14 units.

Solving for a Range of Solutions
JD and Phil are collecting cans to raise money for their hockey team. Their goal is to collect between 120 and 148 cans. JD collects 4 more than triple the number Phil does. How many cans must Phil collect to meet their goal? Phil: x JD: 3x +4 x + 3x + 4 > 120 4x + 4 > 120 4x > 116 4 X > 29 x + 3x + 4 < 148 4x + 4 < 148 4x < 144 x < 36 Phil will have to collect between 29 and 36 cans to meet their goal.
