WRITE, TURN, & DISCUSS "Imagine you are a Chinese citizen - who is NOT involved in the opium trade.   How does the Treaty of Nanjing make you feel? Why?

3 I. EFFECTS OF THE OPIUM WAR ON CHINA
a. 1800s: Qing dynasty was in decline. 1. Peasants were burdened for: Population explosion Tax evasion of the rich Official Corruption

4 2. TAIPING REBELLION- (1850-64) Peasant Rebellion & bloodiest Civil war in history.
Lasted 14 years and caused deaths of million Chinese.

5 b. SPHERES OF INFLUENCE 1. Germany, France, Russia, Britain and Japan fought for spheres of influence (area in which an outside power claims exclusive trading privileges) in China. 2. U.S. called for an Open Door Policy in China, which kept Chinese trade open to everyone on an equal basis.

6 c. DECLINE OF THE MANCHU (CHING) DYNASTY/BOXER REBELLION
Secret Chinese Society: Righteous Harmonious Fists (Boxers), trained in martial arts, and wanted to end foreign influence in China. Attacked foreigners across China and were easily defeated.

7 3. After China was defeated, Chinese expanded their school systems- teaching science and math, mining, shipping, railroads, banking, and exporting crops (westernization).
