Lasted 14 years and caused deaths of million Chinese.

1. Germany, France, Russia, Britain and Japan fought for spheres of influence (area in which an outside power claims exclusive trading privileges) in China.
2. U.S. called for an Open Door Policy in China, which kept Chinese trade open to everyone on an equal basis.

6. c. DECLINE OF THE MANCHU (CHING) DYNASTY/BOXER REBELLION
Secret Chinese Society: Righteous Harmonious Fists (Boxers), trained in martial arts, and wanted to end foreign influence in China.
Attacked foreigners across China and were easily defeated.

7. 3. After China was defeated, Chinese expanded their school systems- teaching science and math, mining, shipping, railroads, banking, and exporting crops (westernization).
