4 Malcolm X Joined Nation of Islam (the black Muslims) while in jail for burglary Led by Elijah Mohammad Called for black superiority and separation from whites Advocated armed self defense 1964 – Converted to Sunni Muslim, went to Mecca, and radically changed his views of whites and racial equality

Founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale to fight police brutality in the ghetto Advocated self-sufficiency, full employment, and decent housing Established daycares and free medical clinics Members felt African Americans should be exempt from military service Preached self-defense and promoted Mao Zedong and communism Got into many shootouts with the police
