Warm-Up 1/30/14 No need to write anything down!
Take the pieces out of the envelope on your table. Use them to label the parts of the atom to the best of your knowledge! Keep it out to see how you did during notes
2
Atomic Structure & Atom Models
Thursday 1/30/14
3
Learning Objective #1 I Can…describe the location, mass, and charge of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom. Put on the Unit 8 (Atomic Theory) cover page! This will go in your ISN.
4
Element—matter that is composed of one type of atom
Elements are abbreviated as either a letter or a series of letters as shorthand. Ex) Aluminum—Al
6
Atom—smallest piece of matter that still has the properties of the element.
7
PROTONS Positive charge (+1) NEUTRONS Neutral/no charge ELECTRONS Negative charge (-1)
8
Nucleus—center of the atom that contains protons and neutrons
9
Electron Cloud—contains the electrons, where they travel in specific energy levels around the nucleus. The farther electrons are from the nucleus, the higher their amount of energy.
10
Electrons in Energy Levels
Energy Level in Atom Maximum # of Electrons 1 2 8 3 18 4 32
11
Electrons in Energy Levels
Bohr Atom Models Example) 5 protons, 5 neutrons, 5 electrons Electrons in Energy Levels Energy Level in Atom Maximum # of Electrons 1 2 8 3 18 4 32
12
Your Job Start Atomic Model Timeline to learn about how we discovered what is inside the atom! Cut out all of the pieces for now, and put them in an envelope with your name on the front. We will finish tomorrow. Don’t forget to start bringing your ISN to class!
