Jeopardy Changes in Matter
Use this game to review vocabulary related to changes in matter. Differences between chemical and physical changes will be reviewed. A “double Jeopardy” is included as indicated by the applause when transitioning to that particular slide. Answers will be revealed on the teacher’s click. This game could be played in small groups or as a whole-group class review. You may consider using whiteboards for all students to write down a response before an individual responds.

This is the smallest possible particle of an element
This is the smallest possible particle of an element. It is also known as the building block of matter. What is an atom?
4
This is a substance made of only one kind of atom.
What is an element?
5
This is a substance made of two or more kinds of atoms that are chemically combined.
What is a compound?
6
Anything that has mass and takes up space is called…
What is matter?
7
A change in the formation of a new substance is called …
What is a chemical change (or chemical reaction)?
8
What are the different parts of an atom?
What is proton, neutron, electron, nucleus, (and empty space)?
9
Which of these would describe a chemical reaction. A. Colorless B
Which of these would describe a chemical reaction? A. Colorless B. Odorless C. Liquid at 20 degrees D. Changing colors What is D.?
10
Give 3 examples of chemical changes.
What are rusting, gas bubbles, tarnishing, reacting with, cooking, decomposing, burning, etc.?
11
A balloon is blown up and tied shut
A balloon is blown up and tied shut. The particles of the air are moving around freely inside the balloon. What happens to the particles when pressure is applied to the balloon? What is the particles in the balloon move closer together, also known as compression?
12
How can you tell the difference between a chemical and physical change?
What is chemical changes result in the formation of a new substance? (image on left is a physical change, right is chemical change)
13
A trait of a substance by itself is known as …
What is a physical property? Physical properties include: appearance, texture, color, odor, melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, polarity, and many others
14
I wanted to make a glass of iced tea sweeter by adding sugar, but the sugar just sits at the bottom of my glass! The solution is saturated. How can I solve my problem and increase the sweetness of my iced tea? What is increase the temperature of the iced tea to increase the solubility.
15
Explain why making a solution is a physical change.
What is you are able to separate the ingredients by evaporating the water. Both ingredients remain the same chemically.
16
A scientist cools a substance that melts at 50. F
A scientist cools a substance that melts at 50*F. What will happen if the substance goes below 50* F? What is it will freeze?
17
Give 5 examples of physical properties.
What are color, texture, size, shape, state, solubility, etc.
18
What is heated (the kinetic energy increases), melting, 32*F (0*C)?
Solid to Liquid (How does it happen, what is it called, what is the temperature for this change to happen to water?) What is heated (the kinetic energy increases), melting, 32*F (0*C)?
19
Gas to Liquid (How does it happen, what is it called, what is the temperature for this change to happen to water?) What is cooled (decrease kinetic energy), condensing (or condensation), 212*F (100*C)?
20
What is heated (increase kinetic energy), evaporating, 212*F (100*C)?
Liquid to Gas (How does it happen, what is it called, what is the temperature for this change to happen to water?) What is heated (increase kinetic energy), evaporating, 212*F (100*C)?
21
Describe the difference between a solution and a suspension
A solution is a homogeneous mixture in which particles of one substance are spread evenly throughout the other substance. A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which particles of a substance are temporarily mixed in a liquid, but eventually separate.
22
Define thermal expansion.
What is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature?
23
Name 3 things that are not matter.
What are heat, light, ideas, music, etc.?
24
Which of these is not an element? Iron, Gold, Silver, Steel
What is steel?
25
What is the acronym to help remember the Metric System and what are its units from largest to smallest? What is King Henry Does Usually Drink Chocolate Milk? kilo, hecto, deka, Unit, deci, centi, milli.
26
Someone mixed iron filings and powder. Can they be separated
Someone mixed iron filings and powder. Can they be separated? If so, how? What kind of change occurred? What is yes, by using a magnet to remove the iron filings? A physical change occurred because all substances remained the same.
27
What is the list of all of the elements called?
What is the periodic table? BONUS: What are the 4 pieces of information you can get from each element?
28
Define and draw a diagram of diffusion.
What is a substance (atoms or molecules) moving from high concentration to low concentration.
29
Is this a chemical or physical reaction: 2 Hydrogen + 1 Oxygen = Water
What is chemical? You are no longer left with your original substances.
30
Is this a chemical or physical reaction: Making Lemonade
What is physical? The sugar and water could be separated.
31
List the liquid densities from smallest to largest: Hint: Density=mass/volume
Mass (g) Volume (mL) Density A 32 40 B 36 C 47 What is liquid A,B,C .
32
Burning a candle and watching the wax melt
DAILY DOUBLE Burning a candle and watching the wax melt What is BOTH? The burning part is chemical because a chemical reaction takes place with the oxygen and the wick. Ash, a new substance is formed. The melting part is physical because the wax is just changing state.
